BATTERIES & LOAD SHEDDING
With the current frequent incidence of power outages – we must realize that there is greater strain on the batteries in all motorized gates, motorized garage doors, and access control systems. Criminals are waiting for someone to leave the door unlocked ‘because the battery has failed’.
If the battery is more than 3 or 4 years old it may have difficulty coping with power outages of 2 hours and more as we are currently experiencing.
The factors that determine how long the batteries will last during a power outage are
- The size of the battery
- The age, condition and state-of-charge of the battery
- The load on the battery (the amount of power being drained from the battery in the normal course of events). Magnetic locks and constantly energized electric strikers use some power constantly 24/7. Most other electromechanical locks use power intermittently for a few seconds at a time – only when they’re required to release the door or gate.Note that keypads biometric readers, intercoms and any devices with LED’s or indicator lights or displays are also drawing a small amount of power 24/7!
Battery drainage can be likened to the amount of water in a bucket which has a hole in the bottom. The size of the whole in that bucket (i.e. the rate at which water is drained) will determined how long water can continue to be available from that bucket.
